KT 5G Use Cases and the Network Evolution

5G is an end-to-end platform that can enable digital transformation of various industries. However, this cannot be done alone. It requires close collaboration with industry players, academia as well as the regulators. In this presentation, I will describe KT’s 5G vision and how we collaborated to develop some of the use cases of 5G. I will also share our experiences from the 5G deployment and the evolution path towards the future network.



Byungsuk Kim is a Vice President of Next Generation Technology at Korea Telecom (KT). He received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Seoul National University and the M.S./Ph.D. degrees in Electronic Engineering from the University of Tokyo. He has been working on 5G network strategy since 2015, and led the technical efforts to provide the world’s first broad-scale 5G trial service at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. He is currently responsible for the spectrum strategy at KT and actively engaged in Beyond 5G network evolution planning. Prior to joining KT in 2011, he was with Samsung Electronics in Korea and Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore) in USA. He has more than 25 years of experience in research, product development, spectrum strategy and strategic planning for wireless networks. His areas of expertise include network QoS, network migration strategy, spectrum strategy and 5G & beyond technologies.

Journey to 5G Evolution toward 6G Era

SK Telecom aims to lead the era of hyper-connected intelligence that connects people, things, and the society on the top of the world-best infrastructure such as not only commercial 5G but 6G network around 2030. In order to accomplish that goal, SK Telecom will continuously promote 5G technology evolution as well as 6G technology innovation. In this presentation, the journey to 5G evolution toward 6G era at SK Telecom will be addressed in technology & service prospective.



Min Soo Na is currently Senior Director and Head of 6G Development of Tech. Group, where he leads end-to-end 6G R&D at SK Telecom, the largest mobile network operator in Korea. He has been leading various ICT R&D projects at SKT and successfully deployed new technologies on 5G/LTE-A/LTE/UMTS and global standardization & alliance on relative topic such as 3GPP, GSMA, NGMN.

6G : The Next Hyper-Connected Experience for All

Since its first commercial launches in 2019, 5G technology is being applied to the core infrastructure of a wide range of industries, and is utilized to support everything from high-quality communications services to smart factories, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and a raft of other new services. While 5G commercialization is still in progress, both academia and industry are initiating research activities to shape the next-generation communication system, namely 6G. In this talk, I will introduce a comprehensive overview of various aspects including technical trends, services, and candidate technologies for 6G. In 6G era, both humans and machines are the main users and many advanced services will be provided such as truly immersive extended reality, high-fidelity mobile hologram, and digital replica. These new services will require a tremendous amount of real-time data processing, a hyper-fast data rate, and extremely low latency. The key candidate technologies to realize them include THz communication and advanced duplex technologies. Some of the recent progress made within Samsung will be also introduced in this talk.



Dongmyoung Kim received the Ph.D. in Seoul National University in 2012. He is currently a Principal Engineer at Samsung Research and currently working on 6G and leading system architecture and protocol related research for 6G. Before joining Samsung research, he worked on commercialization of the first 5G system and MEC at SK telecom. He was also actively participated in 5G system standardization at ETRI as 3GPP SA2 WG delegate.
